June Update
Update for the June 2024 period, including details this month's meeting, and our following event.
We had a very good talk from Liz Stewart, Chief Executive of Scotland's Garden Scheme. The Scheme is a charity, which was set up in 1931, originally to raise funds for the Queen's Nurses, or District Nurses as we know them. Owners of estates and big gardens would open their gardens to the public to raise money for the charity. The king even opened Balmoral to the public. Nowadays, 40% of the money raised goes to the chosen charities of the SGS, which are District Nurses, Perennial and Maggie's and 60% goes to the chosen charities of the garden owners. Queen Camilla is the current patron of the organisation.
The SGS Guidebook was developed to help people choose the gardens they wanted to visit. It covers the whole of Scotland from Shetland, Orkney to the Western Isles and the whole of the Mainland. and is helpfully broken down into districts. Gardens can be big or small, like Crail Open Gardens, which are all open at the same time over a weekend and maybe a dozen different gardens take part. Each garden that is opened is unique. Allotments are in the book as well. The book is a well edited and of good quality and is a welcome edition to any household. Liz had some to give out to us at the meeting. Get the book. I recommend it.
Many photographs of many gardens were shown and every one of them was beautiful. The Garden of Cosmic Speculation near Dumfries is really special, Glassmount, near Kinghorn, Willowhill near Newport, Stockbridge Gardens in Edinburgh, Crail Village Open Gardens. All are open to the public and all are special place for visiting.
On Friday 5th July 2024, Iain Silver will talk to us about roses.
The DBHS Gala Plant Sale took place at Dalgety Bay Gala. It was a good day weather wise. We never raise a lot of money at our Plant Sales. Some would query whether it is worth all the hard work. Dalgety Bay Horticultural Society (DBHS) is a local organisation and should take part in supporting other local organisations, like the Gala. We had a presence there, which was a bit of PR for us. A few Annual Show Schedules were handed out. Thank you to the few of you who turned out to help. It was very much appreciated.
